WMKG-TV signed on the air in 1968 as an independent UHF station serving Muskegon, Grand Haven, and the surrounding West Michigan lakeshore communities. From a small studio just off Airline Road in Norton Shores, WMKG began with a simple mission — to reflect the people, industries, and landscapes of the Great Lakes region back to the neighbors who lived them.

Through the decades, TV31 grew from broadcasting classic movies and local high school sports into a full-service community channel. The station navigated the analog-to-digital transition in the mid-2000s and today broadcasts in high definition on Digital Channel 31, reaching viewers across Muskegon, Ottawa, Oceana, and Newaygo counties.

Today, WMKG remains proudly locally owned and independent — one of the last community-focused broadcasters in the state. Our original documentary series, Fascinating Untold Michigan Stories, has become a signature production, preserving lakeshore heritage for a new generation of viewers.
